Just be aware that Microsoft is not the only player in town when it comes to running virtual machines. In fact, the MS products are my least favorite and least compatible with multiple operating systems IMO.

You can skip all of this hassle by using something like VMWare Server 2.0 (free), VMWare Workstation (not free), or Sun VirtualBox (free). Just because the free VMWare server has the word Server in the title, does not mean that it will not run on non-server OS's. I've used it for years on XP, Vista and now Windows 7.

All virtual machines "hog memory" it's the nature of the beast. Whatever memory you tell the virtual machine to take up, it's gonna take up, regardless if its vbox, vmware,or virtualxp.

Are you kidding me...maybe you have something set incorrectly because as far as speed goes, comparing Sun VirtualBox 3.0.4 on the same box I was running XP Mode....my XP mode box boots in 56 seconds and my VirtualBox XP boots in 24. Here is my thread where I compared the two looking for ways to try to improve the performance. As you can see, VirtualBox for me absolutely demolished XP Mode running on the same hardware with the same OS version and SP on the VM. XP Mode is slow--any way to improve

As far as hogging memory, I cannot say that I have ever noticed. It's usually the RAM assigned to the VM's...and obviously those are going to take up the RAM when I start them.

What version of VirtualBox were you using that you were unhappy with? Like I said, I've never felt that performance in VirtualBox has been anything short of great. I find it faster than VMWare and I find both of them faster than Microsoft Virtual PC or XP Mode.

Well, sorry to hear that. This hasn't been my experience whatsoever. I guess we all have different experiences. I'm just happy mine has been positive.

I have the latest 3.04 version tucked away on the storage drive here. But I have been a little more interested in following what MS has been doing.

As for seeing a system slowed down to a crawl a great deal of that depends on how memory is allocated for the virtual machine as well as how much physical memory is on the system itself. If you have 4gb you don't assign 3-4gb of that to it! Most will run easily with only 512mb upto 1gb reserved.

I installed it all, worked fine but is not serving the purpose I was hoping for. I want to uninstall now. I did via control panel for XP mode, but how do I uninstall "Windows Virtual PC"? It's not in the list for uninstall.
