Windows 7: Windows XP Mode - Install and Setup

A virtual machine, XP Mode or any other, is an individual computer needing its own AV and firewall. My recommendation is to download free Microsoft Security Essentials and use XP's built-in firewall.
(MSE download here: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials.)

Good to know you found how to change assigned RAM. It, like some other settings, can only be modified when virtual machine (XP Mode) is shut down. When hibernated or running, these settings are grayed out.

Thanks for your valuable reply.....

After reading this, I installed the security essential...but it took huge update...So XP mode took high HDD usage.

XP will install many, many updates until it's totally up to date. Unfortunately you can't avoid that because it's now an old system.

The VM is occupying 120gb on my hard drive.

Edit: The C: drive in VM says it is 120gb but in my Win 7 partition it's only using around 50gb actual I think.

Karl, I just let it set its own memory settings on mine, is there really any need to fiddle with that?

I see from your specs you have quite a lot of RAM so your host system could give some of that away, when running XP Mode.

I would give XP Mode the full 3 gigs it can see, you should notice a clear difference when assigning more memory.

Thank Kari, and sorry I called you Karl. I just amended my reply to Arjit.

I'll just let it lie at whatever it's got right now as it seems to be happy.

Just one thing that may need to be noted:

The 3rd step in the update process, as I understand it, (as highlighted by airbot in another post) is not really needed if you have BIOS support for virtualization. Is that correct? So don't bother to download/install the last (Windows6.1-KB977206-x64.msu) if you have BIOS support for virtuallization. Right?
