Can't seem to download xp mode or virtual PC

I'm banging my head against the wall for two days.

I am running Win 7 Ultimate 64, I go to the website, click on the download, go through the validation, then the utility bar pops up. I right click on the bar, click download this program . . . and BOOM! I'm back at the first page where it shows the original download options (what version and language).

It's driving me nuts! I've run it under 64 bit explorer and 32 bit both normally and as administrator. No joy.

Anybody have any ideas? I hope, I hope, I hope.

EDIT: I have run the program in the past, but eventually dumped it, so I know it will run.

Well, then start from the beginning. Run Internet Explorer 8 (Regular, not 64bit to make it simple). Go to this site:
    Download Windows XP Mode
Select your CORRECT OS (Computer>System Properties) I uploaded a pic in case you need its help
Follow All instructions and download everything that it asks you. You will need to run a validation tool first before the 3 downloads. You can download them all after the activation tool downloads (And installs), but you will need to install them all in order afterward.

This is what the activation tool looks like:
(You must select continue before you can download the other items)
Let me know if I confused you and I will clarify

Unless Microsoft fixed it, there was a bug where Windows wouldn't validate using IE8 64-bit. I've actually phoned Microsoft's tech support on that one a while ago.

If you have a valid copy of Windows, try validating under IE8, 32-bit

Not sure what happens with IE9 beta, haven't found I had to validate for anything yet.

    Good luck

You can also download it directly from the Microsoft Download Center:
Windows Virtual PC: Download details: Windows Virtual PC
Windows XP Mode: Download details: Windows XP Mode
Update to remove Hardware Virtualization Requirement for 64-bit Windows 7 (Optional): Download details: Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB977206)

Unless I'm missing something, they still say validation required.

If your copy of Windows has already been validated then you obviously won't have to do it again. However, for those that haven't, well....

True, although in my experience, those who have been unable to validate through the common link of microsoft.com/xpmode, these direct download links although requiring validation, still seem to allow you to download. If all else fails, you can try it in a browser like Firefox or Opera and you should be able to download these easily as they have separate executables for the validation checker, which are easier to run.

    Thanks for the responses folks.

I did the validation as is listed in my initial note, also ran in both 64 and 32 bit IE8. Everything went as it is supposed to, validated properly, then just blipped back to the original download page when I tried to download.

Should comment, I am no neophyte and have had it running before. I will try the direct download links sygnis provided.

    GOT IT!!!!!

Thanks again folks for the assist. FYI I had to start IE8 in "administrator mode," then use the direct links Sygnus21 provided. Ran the validation (which, BTW, did not give me the pop-up with the validate seal) following which, the download links for both 64 bit and x86 versions of virtual PC pop-up.

I also clicked "always download from Microsoft" on that window, so I didn't get the information bar when I hit "download."

Don't know why it was so difficult, but it's a done deal.

    Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to see you got it fixed. And thanks for the credit, but that goes to Darician as he was the one to provide those links :)
