    Device not recognized

Hey all, this is my first post

    K so here's my dilemma.

I'm a tech at a GM dealer and all software used by GM has to be ran on XP. I have windows 7 RC and use that for the most part of the day except for when doing programming. The software for our programming equipment wont install on Windows 7. I have got it to work on Vista before tho. Anyway, I'm not worried about getting it to work on 7 since I've installed and love the Virtual XP machine, it work's great except for one little issue.

The tool we use to do module programming on vehicles is called an MDI (multiple diagnostic interface). It's a wireless unit the plugs into the vehicles DLC (data link connector) and programs modules on the vehicle wirelessly through the shops wifi. There is a desktop application to setup and communicate with the tool called the MDI manager. Initial setup is done with the MDI attached to the computer via USB. Once the setup is done, the computer is supposed to see it wirelessly when it is connected to the vehicle.

I can access the web and see other network devices through the virtual machine no problem, but when I hook the MDI up, the computer never sees it.

Anyone have any thoughts or need more info?!?!

just check the devise manager if you can spot any unknown devices...

Dont you have to install a driver or something for MDI???

Although i am not familiar with the device..
Here what you can do, plug in the device open windows 7 device manager and then check if there is any unknown device listed. If you find one, that means you need to install a driver. But you dont have one. i think the driver is included in that software for the device.

I think what is happening is that the software for the device is installed in the guest os(xp) but it is not installed on the host os(Windows 7) that is the reason that device is not provided to the guest os(xp).

You need the driver. I think you will get it in
"Windows xp drive(in VM)\windows\system32". Copy two folder named as "Drive store" and "Drivers" and past it in any drive in your physical machine. Now open device manager of windows 7 right click the unknow device and click "update driver" now click "browse my computer for driver software". Then chose one of those folder and let it search and if driver is not found then again chose the other folder.

O i forgot to tell you welcome to sevenforums..

    Hope this will work....
    Best of luck...

    gm mdi

I also have the same issue. To whom ever can help, the mdi is an interface between the car and the cpu. The mdi has its own ip address, and the cpu uses software from gm secured web site to command the mdi. The mdi mush be connect directly to the internet. The problem i think i am having is that the virtual xp does not have direct access to the wireless card. Somewhere between the wireless card and the transition of info to xp the data is lost, or unrecognized. The mdi manager is only to update the mdi, or set its connection method..i.e. wired or wireless. Can the virtual xp have direct access to the wireless card. It does not show up in the network manager.
