Installing antivirus in windows XP Mode

I have completed the installation of xp mode on my windows 7 64-bit professional computer with the exception of the antivirus. I'm using a multi-user Trend Titanium Maximum Security 64-bit version on windows 7 and have tried to install the second copy from the xp mode as per the instructions that I am following. Due to the xp mode being a 32-bit system I tried loading the 32-bit Trend version but the install failed with a "incompatiable version of internet explorer" error message. Therefore due I load from the xp mode or thru the virual machine and/or install the 64-bit version for xp mode. I do have Internet Explorer access when in the xp mode.

Do you need a full suite in your VM? I run ESET NOD32 for all my systems, but in any VMs I create, I just use Microsoft Security Essentials.

I run the free version of Avast but you can easily get by with MSE or AVG as well.

Being new to running XP inside of Win 7 is necessary to have Virus Protection if I am just using XP to run my older Programs in XP mode. Of do I have to look at this as 2 seperate OS and treat each as seperatly?

I treat them as separate computers, but I use XP in a way that it is on my same network and accessible from my network directly...as are other OSes that I install virtually.

I have to agree. XP under VM communicates with the internet and appears to have the same vulnerabilities.

I did not completely agree until last week as I only use VM/XP to run an older high speed HP document scanner that is not compatible with W7. I never downloaded anything when using VM/XP so I naively figured I had no risk. Well, last week my machine suddenly became infected with the Tracur trojan (normal W7) and it was very difficult to remove. It appears to have been delivered by simply visiting some web site. Since we are very careful where we go I cannot explain where it came from but the fact remains that it did infect my machine. I then realized I sometime use Internet Explorer under VM/XP when waiting for a large number of documents to finish scanning. Not willing to take any chances I installed Eset NOD 32.

In the collective experience of all you Guru's is Microsoft Security Essentials as good as most people say. I have used it on my older XP machine for years and to my knowledge never had a problem. I am using it now on my Win 7 system and just put it on my virtual XP machine.

DeaconFrost, please explain REP I don't understand the term.

REP is short for reputation, meaning you can add to a person's rep when they post something useful or beneficial. You do that by clicking the silver scale icon in the upper right of their post.
