    XP Mode - Startup Link

I have successfully moved my XP Mode hard disk to an external drive and it works well. A few times I have started XP Mode (via the Start menu: Windows XP Mode link) without the external drive turned on. This would cause a message to be displayed saying the disk cannot be found (or something like that), "would you like to set up XP Mode?" Normally I would always select cancel, turn on the drive and start the virtual machine with no problems.

However, this last time I accidently selected Setup/Create XP Mode instead of cancel. When the wizard started, I cancelled out of the first screen. But now when I try and start XP Mode from the Start menu link, the XP Mode Setup wizards always is displayed. I can use XP mode by starting it within the Windows Virtual PC manager with no problems. Here's the Start menu link now:

    %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\VMCPropertyHandler.dll,LaunchDefaultVM

Is this correct for starting up XP Mode? If so, is it possible to change a setting or reg entry so my original and current XP Mode machine will start instead of the XP Mode setup wizard?

    Thanks!

    Karl -

Thanks for the suggestion. I did try a system restore but that did not resolve the issue. I'm still getting the Windows XP Mode setup wizard. Granted this isn't a giant problem as I can start the vm other ways but it is getting rather annoying.

Pity. My only solution is draconian: Uninstall XP Mode and reinstall. No fun when you end up having sixty some odd updates even with xp sp3. I just installed xp mode again to refresh myself on the procedure.

Incidentally, we have an excellent tutorial written by Brink on installing xp mode.
