Ah I figured as much. I'll just have to get used to booting Win 7 without the signed driver enforcement. Its not that hard...

I work at an office retailer, and I actually helped a customer install an older program on Win XP mode, and it was one that output morse code to the speaker for HAM radio stuff.

Oh well. If I REALLY wanted Windows XP, I'd set up my computer for a dual boot. I've never done that, and I'm curious how its done in Win 7. Hmmm. That gives me an idea for another thread... (goes to search existing threads)

Look in the tutorial section here for one of the guide on dual booting 7! Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP

The guide there covers everything. The best move for adding XP after 7 is simply unplugging the drive 7 is on first before booting from the XP cd to prevent seeing the 7 mbr trashed and XP made default. Once XP is on as a stand alone you simply replug the 7 drive back in and follow the instructions oh how to see a new boot entry for XP added into the 7 BCD store(boot menu options).

The VM Lite is a good one if you are not able to get the MS VPC and XP Mode working together. Plus that doesn't have the same level of hardware support required and good for older systems. Hopefully your board isn't too new otherwise you may not find any XP drivers available!

In response to the initial question, see if the hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2519949 helps.

One way to avoid the need to repair the 7 mbr once XP goes if on a separate drive is to simply unplug the 7 host drive, install XP, and then replug the 7 drive back in. Then you can edit the XP boot entry into the 7 BCD store with the free version of EasyBCD

    Hello,
I have been following your thread here about TheGeek007 trying to install XP Mode hoping to find a solution for my very similar problem.

I too have problems installing it, but mine are not quite the same. I have been able to install it before, but then after having problems with Windows and deciding to do a clean install, I got odd results when trying to re-install XP Mode. Right after doing a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate, and after the one update it insists on doing, I was unable to install it once. So I ran a few more updates and then it installed fine. But then a just a short bit later I had a problem so I decided to start all over. So upon re-installing Windows, and the one update, it installed right away (great). But me and my nature, I couldn't leave well enough alone, so I decided to try that again. So I re-installed Windows, the one update, and then no luck, XP Mode won't install.

The Virtual Machine installs fine, then I reboot. The program installs just fine, but then when it goes to 'configure?' it, it fails. I initially installed it to drive D: (including the user data) and it worked just fine. Since then, I have tried every possible combination of C: & D: choices (program on C:, data on D:, visa versa, etc) with no luck. I have waited until it did a few updates and then tried again, hoping that maybe this or that update would make a difference.

I suppose it is possible that it is a hardware issue except that other than this problem, my system is running just fine (and almost all of the parts in it are new).

    Any thoughts?

    Thanx,
    Diehard

Hello diehardmsc Welcome to the Seven Forums! :)

Due to this being an old thread I would recommend starting a new one for people to help you there.
