Create a VM from a pre installed version of windows?

hello. for those who got confused by the title of the thread (i couldn't) put it into better context from what it is) my situation is as follows.
i have an old laptop which came pre installed with windows vista. i was considering making a vm of vista on my current laptop but as it was pre installed, i have no way of getting the installation files off so i can run it throught the vm and install it. is there any way to get around this (preferabaly legal:))?
    thanks in advance.

Have a look at this MS tool: Disk2VHD. It should be able to create a virtual hard disk from your existing install that can then be imported into a VM.
