XP Mode refuses to set up

Hi. I'm going slightly mad here. I can't get XP Mode to set up. I went to the Microsoft site, downloaded and installed XP Mode, then downloaded and installed Virtual PC. I'm just now realizing that after installing the second item, Windows should have wanted to re-boot to install an update. Well, that didn't happen.

I tried to troubleshoot, but didn't get very far. I went into BIOS and confirmed that virtualization was enabled. I even tried going into my Control Panel and disabling/re-enabling Virtual PC.

Nothing is working, and I'm getting very frustrated. I've got all my specs in my profile, if anyone notices something there that might be relevant.

Thanks,
raen

Are you getting an error message? I'm totally confused on what your problem actually is.

The first time I tried to install Virtual PC, it just quietly installed without telling me to re-boot.

Running XP Mode setup ends with an error message that says "Could not complete Setup. Please try again."

Trying to re-install Virtual PC gives me an error message that says "The update is not applicable to your computer."

And you are running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate, right? You cannot install and use XP Mode on Home Edition.

Windows 7 Professional SP1 x64. And it's a fresh, clean installation. No tweaks, just hardware drivers, Microsoft Security Essentials and and all the updates Windows Update can provide. I haven't even added the second user profile yet.

See if the hotfix from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2519949 helps.

As it turns out, I do have a Bulldozer-based processor, so thank you for identifying the root of my problem. At least now the mystery is solved.

The warnings and caveats on the hotfix, however, are making me leery. I think I'll muddle through without XP Mode for a while; it's just not worth it.

But I do appreciate your shining a light on things.

Thank you,
raen
