Can a Dynamically Allocated Virtualbox VM overwrite existing files?

    Hey all,

Just wondering if setting up a Virtualbox VM with Dynamically Allocated size can overwrite files that already exist on a drive? I've set quite a few up now on an external disk (not the fastest method but storage on my internals is running a little low).

I would assume that it doesn't overwrite existing data, but just wanted to check with you guys to make sure. :)

No. It's just like any other file that gets extended.

Thanks Keith! I was hoping that was the case. Didn't want to overwrite and of my system images on that drive!

I've got close to 200GB of VMs on my external data drive and have no problems.

Nope, it can grow to X size that you specified, but only if there is sufficient free space on the hard drive to do so.

Best is to use an external SSD attached to a USB3 or eSata port.
