How do I know if my MB has VTM?

Hi everyone,

first off let me say it's nice to see a thread where multiple users are helping someone without telling him he's dumb for not knowing the answers lol Now, on to more important things...

I have a similar situation with a couple of differences:

the computer in question is a Gateway LX6810-01
my CPU as is does not support Virtualization however I've found a compatible CPU (Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400) with VT support however, I'm hoping to confirm if my MB/BIOS will play nice and allow me to use the feature. My end goal is to run existing 64 bit VMs which I had created on my Asus laptop (which does support VT).

The BIOS is locked (thanks Gateway) and there are no traces of any option related to VT in specific. I'm optimistic that installing a VT capable CPU will either show me an option to enable it or will be enabled by default, but I'd rather not spend the money on a CPU if it's not going to give me what I need.

Can anyone assist ?

Gateway machines are notorious for all kinds of things going wrong. My personal opinion is to invest in a different board & CPU combo and do yourself right and not deal with the aggravation. You can get yourself something nice from E-Bay used or get from a place new like TigerDirect.com or Newwegg.dom . Might I also suggest an AMD CPU as I have ran all kinds of boards and found these to be exceptional. It is a matter of what you are willing to invest right now of course.Time & money wise.

I agree with you completely... but i've already got this Gateway machine and while it is limited in many ways, it suits my purpose ALMOST perfectly. I've had your suggestion in my head for a week now (since I first ran into this situation) but i'd like to salvage as much out of that gateway as possible.

I mostly use it as a media centre machine, and I have my Asus laptop for my more intense activities, right now, it would be nice if i could find solution path to get me to a point where I have VMWare Server running on the gateway (which is how i got on this whole mess of VT support)
