Installing Quicken 2003 Virtual XP

Before setting out on the new machine to install Quicken 2003 using the XP mode (and following MS's instructions Install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7), 2 points that only need answering if there's a negative:

1. Has anyone already installed this version of Quicken and found a compatibility problem with the app and XP mode?

2. Does an SSD primary drive change any of the standard instructions for downloading and installing XP and the virtual drive?

As to your second question, no, nothing different.

A few questions post install--

1. Even though I installed Quicken in XP mode I did not see anything different on screen--the Quicken shortcut installed on the 'normal' Win7 desktop (I guess I was thinking that the icon would show up in the XP window that the instructions said to close after installing XP) and when Quicken opens there's no indication that it's running in XP mode that I can see?

2. When I close Quicken I'm not prompted to close the virtual space. From memory I did something that caused the virtual space to hibernate but I'm almost positive that was an independent action on my part. So I don't get why the thing stays open using system resources unnecessarily?

3. The OS wants separate malware protection. I've used my 3 Norton 360 licenses. Is there any reason not to install and run MS Essentials security in the XP space?

It sounds like you installed Quicken to Windows 7 rather than XP.

You should run the installer from the CD from inside XP.

I use MS security Essentials inside XP mode and it works well.

It appears that I may have lucked out. A Quicken Win7 install attempt did install, did run, loaded the data file and updated itself--we'll see.

In retrospect I'm not sure I understand your point of running the installer inside XP and I should get a handle on this thing if I need to really do an XP install.

The virtual window opened at ~2/3's the Win7 screen and I left it that way. Installing from the DVD, unless you're saying you drag the initial installer screen inside the virtual desktop, one has no control over if or if not the installer is using the virtual space?

Ah, unless you maximize the virtual desktop window to consume the entire Win7 desktop then the installer only 'sees' the virtual space?

Select the CD or DVD drive from within the XP window and click on the install file.

I have found that most applications that install in Windows and function will continue to do so.

I'm glad that it worked for you in XP mode, however.

2 problems (virtual memory low + connect to WiFi printer) have cropped up--

The printer is the most troublesome. Is there a way to get an XP mode application to see the network installed WiFi printer? If not, I think I can run the printer in both USB and WiFi mode but would have to check.

I get a lower right bubble message just after Quicken loads to the effect 'your sys is low on virtual mem Windows will adjust but you may experience...I forgot the word but basically meant performance problems'. I've got 8GB of phsyical memory so is there some way to tell the XP mode to take more memory when it launches?

To increase the amount of RAM avaiable to XP mode (512 MB is the default), make sure XP mode is shutdown not hibernated.

Then in the Start menu, select All Programs, Windows Virtual PC, Windows Virtual PC

Then select the Windows XP mode.vmcx

You will see settings in the menu bar.

Increase the amount of Memory used.


Network printer, you should be able to install it from inside XP mode using the Add Printer Wizard in Printers and Faxes
