Help vmware server can't access VM - IE8 protected mode

Hi there

I don't know what I've done but I can't seem to get IE8 to access my XP virtual machine on vmware server

Trying to logon to my XP system (via the remote console - OK it's on the same physical box but that's not an issue) I keep getting some message about IE8 is in "Protected mode" and can't access the console.

How do I remove this -- I've never got that message before.

I must have clicked something -- I'd hate to restore a system just for this silly problem.

Yeah, you just need to run IE8 as admin. Protection mode keeps IE8 from having access to the system. Which should not be turned off!

As I'm running the server on the same box as the vm I just added the local site to the list of trusted sites.

I'd somewhow removed the site from the list of trusted sites which is why I got the error.

I agree DON'T turn protection off.

So VMware and xp mode on same machine running W7, and u access xp mode via IE8?

Hi there

Don't forget that any vm running under vmware server is running as a BACKGROUND process so you don't use a GUI unlike vmware workstation.

you access your Virtual machine via http://ipaddress:8222 where ipaddress is the ipaddress of the VIRTUAL machine (not the server).

You logon to the Server console with the same command using the IP address of the server. (ip address can be replaced by domain name if you have one)


Remotely you access it via //nodename (or Ip address):8222

works fine. From OUTSIDE your LAN you need to port forward 8222 to the machine running vmware server. You use the same command but with the ip address of a VM if you want to logon directly to a specific vm.

Note the vm's don't have to EXIST on that machine -- these are defined in "Datastores" which can reside anywhere on your network - even NAS storage. You only need to type the address as above to get to the console of the ACTUAL vm you want to logon to. The server handles all the networking bits.

I'm using Bridged networking so each vm has its own IP address.

The whole system is very flexible and it works a treat.

so just like RSA connection or Remotely Anywhere, where they too uses browser to access.

So basically you are running this VM server on your w7 machine and use it as a central server for other machines to remote to?

This scenerio would work well for small businesses (eg shops) where each machine can connect to the central server for file sharing.

Ok installed VM server 2.0 and created VM but how to boot to CD to install OS?

It powered on and i press F2 or F12 ?? Get this message. What did i not do?

I'll go through the setup a bit later today -- it's not that difficult

I'll have to do it when the Boss is not looking - I'm a bit busy at the moment (for a change) - As an external guy I have to at least LOOK like i'm busy .
