The thing I did differently was to load win virtual pc first, then after restart loaded xp mode. Will try the reverse as shown in tutorial tomorrow to see if that works.
I also uninstalled it through win7 programs control panel which did remove the files listed in tutorial and the k... update, but more complete with removal of the other files in their directories. That should not have made a difference.
For what it is worth... I installed the XP Mode (into a W7pro VM) a few minutes after you made your first post to this thread. The installation did not ask for a key. I also took the XP Mode VHD and ran it via VirtualBox. It would not activate using the key that comes with the XP Mode install... so MS might have changed the way that they activate the XP Mode OS when it is installed on the proper host OS (e.g. W7 pro).
I'm surprised the Microsoft would even talk to you about installing the XP Mode onto a Windows 7 Home Edition box. Installing the XP Mode on that OS would be a violation of the MS EULA.
I also have win7 pro so they may have thought I was using it there. I will try the procedure on pro, but it is not the computer I need it on.
As UsernameIssues stated you will not be able to use it on Windows home premium, I didn't see that in your first post that you were trying to do it on home premium.

Interesting results. You were right. The problem was trying to get virtual on home edition, even though I did have it months ago but changed hard drives. I just upgraded to Pro on my Home-64-bit computer and it worked. Thanks for your help.
Ummm, I wonder why Microsoft told me on the telephone that the key was blocked and they had no intentions of opening it up since January, even though their site still encourages getting XP Mode.
