    VM from WindowsImageBackup

    Hi,

I created a System Image of my SSD with the backup utility built-in Win7
And I would like to use this image as a virtual Machine,

-I tried to do it with Windows Virtual PC:
but when I select "use an existing virtual hard disk"
it tells me "Cannot attack the virtual hard disk to the virtual machine. Check the values provided and try again."

And If I try to assing it after in setting as Hard Disk 1, it tell me that it is too large for the IDE bus anyway :/

    -I tried with VirtualBox:
"Utiliser un fichier de disque dur virtuel existant" je selection mon backup,
But when I start the WM it just say "FATAL/ INT18: BOOT FAILURE

-Didn't tried with WMware Player since it doesn't work with .vhd files

    Any Ideas please?

Hello Titousky, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if you may be able to using Windows Virtual PC instead using the same method in the tutorial below.

System Image - Extracting Files from using Virtual PC

    Hope this helps, :)

    Thanks for your answer,
But this link explain how to mount the backup image as a second hard drive so you can take files from it,
But not how to launch it in a virtual machine and launch it´s own windows OS :,(

i read somewhere that a windows backup image can only be restored on the same PC (exactly same config) that it was backup from, so maybe the virtual environment is detected as too different and it's why it won't work.

Do you think my only choice is to create a new vm and install a windows from scatch inside?

Once you have it mounted in the VM, see if running a startup repair in the VM may be able to allow it to boot.

If I boot the VM with the Repair Disk inserted, it tells me
    "Non-System disk or disk error
Replace and press any key when ready"

I find it very odd since the disk boot normaly when I power-up my PC :/

Your system specs show the size of your SSD as 160 GB. The maximum size of a VHD in Virtual PC is 127 GB; if the VHD is bigger than this you cannot use it in Virtual PC.

Yes but VirtualBox does the same, is VirtualBox also limited to 127gb?

I do not use VirtualBox, I cannot answer that. Hopefully some VirtualBox user sees this and can answer.

VBox offers up to 2TB as an option for a dynamically-sized virtual drive - I've never used more than 80GB.

Ok, so is it possible or not to Virtualise an Image disk created with Windows Backup?
Or do I need to reinstall all my OS, drivers, softs all over again in a new virtual machine?
