Installing sharepoint

I am tinkering around with Sharepoint just to get a feel of it. I have Virtualbox installed with 2012 server on it. Since Sharepoint is a "server" do I just install it alone, or do I install it onto the 2012 server?

This is the fly-out on the icon for SharePoint Workspace 2010, does imply that SharePoint resides on a server somewhere.

Hey, if you get a chance, could you check if this still works:

How to map a Sharepoint Document Library as a PC local drive @ Served and Witnessed

It allows / allowed you to map sharepoint to a local drive ... But I don't have access to the latest version.

Thanks
