i tried update the windows nt, i copied the update sp6 on cd but i am not able to open the cd from the virtual machine , also us not recognized , i already attached usb to the virtual machine and it shows on the vmplayer tools but i can not find it any where on the windows nt virtual machine.
why i am not able to access CD room from guest, sharing folders not working between guest and host..
i really need a way of upgrading sp3 to sp6 to be able to download vmware tools
    any help appreciated

You probably mean Windows NT 4. This link shows SP6a available:
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/246009/en-us

Note: all versions of Windows from version 2000 on are based upon NT. New Technology or Next Technology
There were 2 versions of Windows NT 4, Workstation and Server. I never used Server but still have a copy of the software for Workstation.

Are you saying you can't access the physical CD in the optical drive? Did you download sp6 as an ISO or is it an executable? If it's an ISO then you can simply point the virtual CD drive at the ISO, if it's an executable then you simply need to run it. There shouldn't be any need for a physical CD.

As I recall WinNT 4 one has to install a CD driver to gain access to the disc. That was not always needed in Win2000 and later due to more things being included in the install. Same for USB which would preclude copying the contents of the CD to a USB Thumb/Flash drive.

How were you able to install NT 4 on the VM in the first place? You either needed to access a physical CD then or an ISO. Use the same method to install the service pack.

i am not sure what you mean, i used Vmware player to install NT as virtual machine using the vmdk file,
i do not really know how to install the sp3 using the VmWare player ...
    i used VMware® Player , 4.0.6 build-1035888 to run Windows NT 4 sp3

So somebody gave you a vmdk file containing NT 4 sp3 to copy to your machine?
