Is it necessary to defrag a virtual hard drive?

Here is some google wisdom, believe it if you wish:
Defragging the host will defrag the .vhd file, but it will not defrag the individual files within the .vhd file. To defrag the files within the .vhd you would have to run a defrag from within the VM.
It is not recommended by the any of the companies that make defraggers as a routine maintenance step.
So it sounds like we should defrag our vhd. Yet, your last statement throws me off...

Those aren't my opinions. They are direct pastes from Google. I have no idea of their accuracy. I take the last statement to imply that it is rarely if ever needed, but?
Personally, I've never ran a defrag on my VHD, but was wondering if anyone did and noticed a speed improvement.
