XP Mode installation--enabling Hardware in BIOS

After several days of trying, I finally managed to get a functional Windows system and installed 7 Pro as a dual boot with 7 Home Premium. I bought 7 Pro because I wanted XP mode to play a bunch of old games that are not supported beyond XP. I still have my XP disks, and could install it as another OS just to play those games, but if I can get the XP virtual machine I'd much rather do that. The software is still available from Microsoft.



Any way, I found your tutorial on how to install and set XP Mode up, got the hardware virtualization compatibility tool, ran it, and it came out "virtualization hardware not enabled". The tool link for instructions simply go to general current Microsoft help. I have an ASUS P5G41-M LE/CSM motherboard, and I still have the installation disk for it. I went to the BIOS setup, and didn't find anything that looked promising. There is nothing in my onboard help on XP Mode that comes up when that is typed in.



Things have certainly changed a lot in the Windows/Microsoft world since I used to spend days in KnowledgeBase when running 95 and 98.

you need to make a BIOS change when you get that error. There is a Learn More link in that section which should help you with it.

I'd like to help you answer your question. The information I suspect you are looking for is on page 2-11 of the ASUS user manual.

The BIOS menu setting is in Advanced > CPU Configuration > Intel Virtualization Tech. Ensure that this item is set to [Enabled].

Just a small suggestion. If you can run V-Box you will probably be happier by using your copy of XP in that. I found it gives more flexibility than M$'s VXP.

Sorry to have taken so long, but everything computer has been hectic for several days.


I checked the BIOS for my motherboard, and when I ran the test, Intel Virtualization was in the default mode, which was [enabled]. I will run it again and see if anything is different.



This motherboard is 9 years old, and I've never tried to use virtualization before. I have no idea how to do it, but will study up and if installing V-Box is better and will work on this computer, I will experiment.

I just noticed that the link I gave you wasn't in the forum of a link. It was where I downloaded the file. Turns out it's in .mht format and it's not compatible with the forum formats for uploading. I could .zip it but you're in good hands with the other guys.
