Speaking of VB I see they just updated(3.1.6). I'm new to VB so I'm wondering what others experience is afa just installing the update on top of a previous edition. The odds of being hosed I guess is what I mean(unless there's some other methodology other than just running the installer?) I only have on VM but even though I didn't put all that much into it I'm lazy and hate to waste it when I do make some effort. :)
I simply installed over the top. No problems.

However, if you have a Windows based guest, you may need to uninstall the existing guest additions before installing the latest 3.1.6 additions.

Always been safe for me. Remember that the real guts of any VM is within the hard drive file. So, as long as it's not deleted during an upgrade...everything else is easily fixable. You can just create a new VM, attach your old hard drive and you are right back in business.

Have any of you had a Problem With VM when trying to Connect The Virtual Cube or Any Effects from the Appearance tab? for some reason every time i try and enable the effects it fails although in Virtual Box Its the opposite problem the Effects work flawless but it will not let me enable my 2nd processor like VM. IMO vm runs better on my machine so i would to fix the problem i am having with the effects not being able to be enabled ! =D

Which distro (9.10 or 10.4 beta) and which version of Virtualbox?

VB 3.1.6 + 10.4 beta = all compiz effects (cube etc) work

Did you install the guest additions?

Under VirtualBox's setting System > motherboard tab , did you enable IO APIC and then select the amount of processors?

As for VMware player, I don't use it so I can't help you there
