XP Mode VPC redraw like treacle

    Hi,

I have Win 7 pro so I have a XP mode license. I've installed XP mode and I want to use as a VPC rather than integrate. Base PC is AMD 4 core with 8G ram so not too slow. But using XP mode in a window has a redraw in seconds (well at least 1 or 2s). It's painful. I've tried the 16ms to 1ms change in options and turning off services but it just tweaks at bit (0.9s say).

    Any suggestions?

Would I be better off with virtual box and can I use my xp mode vhd in virtual box? I read about vmlite plugin but that just seems to suit vbox 3 when 4 is out now, or do I have that wrong?

Malc, you can copy the vhd (just the vhd) to another directory and using the vpc, create a new one and tell it to use and existing vhd and then you can start it and install the integration features. should do what you need.

Do you mean I need to install MS virtual PC software? I've installed xp mode download for win 7. I've turned off autopublish and integration. I'm just starting the vmcx file and running in a large window or full screen rather than in integrated mode. I want a sandbox rather than run old programs.

I thought XP mode was MS virtual PC underneath. What I don't understand is why it is so slow. You can see the redraw happen. And I've turned off all screen effects.

malc, yes I believe you have to install the ms vpc software in order to have other virtual machines.

If you are using original Windows XP Mode, not XP Mode vhd imported to VirtulaBox or VMware, you already have Microsoft Virtual PC.

XP Mode is nothing else than a VPC virtual machine; it does not run without Virtual PC.

Thanks Kari. I did think I must have MS Virtual PC as part of XP Mode. I've come across this on vmlite bios. I'm now seeing how virtual box works with from the same vhd. It certain seems a lot better. Fossiltoys gives over a factor of 2 speed increase and the redraw is no longer visible.
