Software/License error with Windows Virtual PC - XP

Hi Guys,

I'm running windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on my work computer, a Dell Latitude E6400, and was attempting to use the windows virtual pc as a means of installing our personal software on it (a few of the drivers will only work on 32bit systems). For the software, we use a sentinel key in order to allow the customers 30 day and permanent versions (the software controls some fairly expensive machinery). I was able to get the software installed on the virtual version of XP, but when it checks the key, it thinks that the code's expired, and asks for an updated one. When I enter a new code and click on update, the code just disappears.

This only happens with working codes as the software will tell me that the code is incorrect. I have tried the key on computers running XP, and it works without confusing the code for being expired. Has anyone else seen their software do something similar? I'm basically trying to find the cheapest possible work around right now, but I'm just stuck at that window. Do you guys think that this is a Windows 7/XP problem, or a problem with our software? Any help would be appreciated.

If your using a hardware key, e.g.: dongle that plugs into a parallel port, you will need to make sure that the communications port it is plugged into is being "bound" to the virtual machine when it starts.

By bound I mean that you have "told" the virtual machine to use the required port when it starts up.

In order to tell the virtual machine you will need to make adjustments to settings whilst the virtual machine is off.

Try this YouTube - Windows 7 XP Mode: Adjust Memory tutorial. A few minutes into the tutorial you will find what your looking for, except rather than adjusting the memory available to the virtual machine you will be adjusting comm ports (I am guessing!).

Thanks Davo, but the dongle is actually USB, and the I usually attach it so that the virtual drive can read it. I know it can because our software gives me a locking code necessary for the key gen to generate a correct key. If it couldn't see it, I would just get the script 'error' in that section instead of a code.

Today my VP of Engineering actually was able to hook me up with a version of the software that didn't require a code, which I was able to tweak to work on windows 7, so I don't really need an answer for this anymore...but I'm still curious as to why the code disappears. It even started doing it on my version of 7
