Goodnight Kari, I have to take my meds in just a few moments and go to bed also but wanted to give Jill this info, If your DEFAULT Font is anything other than Courier, Helvicta, Arial, Pica and Elite (preferably Arial or Courier which are 2 of the Standards)
please make it so that one of them is the Default Font Style and preferably 10 or 12 dot pitch (DPI). The reason I am doing this is the HP and HP II were built around the original FONT set and stayed true to them, the HP III (all Laser Printers) did but believe it was the HP III P that came with the newer standards and began giving problems when older programs were used. When HP brought out the HP 4, HP 4 P and 4 L they all had the HP II emulation style set built into their engines. When I worked for Navy Medicine and we ran into issues with printer that typed other than what we expected we'd immediately see if the printer had HP II emulation built in and if it did we'd set the printer to HP II and everything was right as rain, the only time we had further issues is when some user got it into their head to use one of the more exotic type sets Windows NT allowed them to and we'd get garbage and we'd explain why they could not. When the HP 5 came out things got appreciably better, I'm hoping we can establish your Brother can emulate HP. If I cant get back to you tonight or it doesn't straighten out we can attack again tomorrow. One final thought for the night is to use the HP LJ IIP driver, this is the standard used by HP, Brother and Alps to solve many issues in Windows NT4 and still apply to NT based Windows OS's.

Thanks for replying. I've been out all evening. I'll do this in the morning and get back to you.

For the record, my printer is networked ...it's connected to a router. It's not connected to my computer.

Should I follow the steps above and connect it to my computer (I'll have to move stuff around to make it reach). Or can I disconnect it from the router ... and go through the same steps?

Except I guess then it won't "find" it. Hmm...

Suggestions?

It will be at least 10 hours before I get back to the computer.

Jill,
No problems, I have Oncology Physical Therapy today and will be out most of the afternoon anyway, you should be fine doing it as a network printer but you might have to connect it to a PC in the first instance then once running move it back to the network but we can take that one step at a time. I was hoping to find a .pdf of your manual to see if there were internal settings in your printers setup menu which would allow you to specify it as an HP II, III or 4 but no joy finding it.

No luck so far today.

Few things:

I uninstalled the printer and then hooked it up via USB directly to my computer. When I go to install it, I am unable to figure out how to tell it to install an HP LJ IIP printer. The dialog is asking for a specific location on my computer ... rather than listing printer types and allowing me to choose.

That being said, when the Brother drivers are installed, I can to into properties and change the driver. I installed HP LJ IIp and set it to that. Didn't work.

I also found the setting directly on the printer to set it to emulate HP Laserjet. But it didn't work.

I called Brother .. they blamed it on the software.

You said to set the default font to courier .. .but I'm not sure where I'd do that.

Still working on trying different things. Just wanted to post something in case you check in.

Just figure out how to tell it I have a HP LJ IIp attached to my USB port. But it doesn't matter.

You know ... Medisoft is previewing in the wrong font. It doesn't even care which printer I'm potentially sending it to at that point. After it previews, I could select any printer. Thoughts?

The software company does not provide tech support on this version. But my history with the tech support at that company is that they make you pay a lot of money BEFORE you even talk to them. Then they tell you they don't have an answer for you. Very frustrating.

As a reminder ... I mentioned above that it worked very briefly after set the printer to "download true type fonts). But that quit working. So I did manage to get the program to both preview and print correctly. I can't get back to that point.

Whew... I thought you forgot about me.

I'm not running Medisoft 16. I'm running Medisoft 11 which Medisoft no longer supports.

I am not upgrading for two reasons:

1. The newer version won't allow me to directly access the data through ODBC drivers.
2. The newer version costs a lot and it's a crappy piece of software. Ultimately the company I contract for is going to move away from Medisoft and is not willing to upgrade the software at this point.

So I"m stuck trying to get Medisoft 11 to print correctly in XP Mode (since it won't run on Windows 7).

Any more thoughts?

also found there was a firmware revision in 2008 Firmware update don't know if you did it or if it will be of assist.

Did find Windows 7 drivers for it which might be a big help:

Drivers, utilities and software updates for your Brother Product

and finally got a working .pdf of your printers manual! Woot!!!! Here is the emulation info:

Printer Emulation Support 1
Your machine will receive print commands in a printer job language or emulation. Different operating systems
and applications will send the print commands in different languages. Your machine can receive print
commands in a variety of emulations and has an automatic emulation selection feature. When the machine
receives data from the computer, it automatically chooses the emulation mode. The default setting is
Auto(Epson). The machine can choose from the following combinations:
Your machine has the following emulation modes. You can change the setting by using the control panel.
 HP LaserJet Mode
The HP LaserJet mode (or HP mode) is the emulation mode in which this printer supports the PCL6
language of a Hewlett-Packard® LaserJet laser printer. Many applications support this type of laser printer.
Using this mode will allow your printer to run at its best with those applications.
 BR-Script3 Mode
BR-Script is an original Brother page description language and a PostScript® language emulation
interpreter. This printer supports level 3. The BR-Script interpreter of this printer allows you to control text
and graphics on the page.
For technical information about PostScript® commands, see the following manuals:
• Adobe Systems Incorporated. PostScript® Language Reference, 3rd edition. Addison-Wesley
Professional, 1999. ISBN: 0-201-37922-8
• Adobe Systems Incorporated. PostScript® Language Program Design. Addison-Wesley Professional,
1988. ISBN: 0-201-14396-8
• Adobe Systems Incorporated. PostScript® Language Tutorial and Cookbook. Addison-Wesley
Professional, 1985. ISBN: 0-201-10179-3
EPSON FX-850 and IBM Proprinter XL Mode
The EPSON FX-850 and IBM Proprinter XL modes are the emulation modes that this printer supports to
meet the industry-standard for dot matrix printers. Some applications support these dot matrix printer
emulations. Use these emulation modes so your printer will work well when printing from those types of
applications.
Auto (Epson) - default Auto (IBM)

OK my other post deals with your printer directly, sorry it took so long, between searching and Dr appointments I was not on the forum very long since yesterday just bits and spurts but w/o real facts to give you.

My guess is you should probably pick whichever printer emulation supports what V11 of your Medsoft manual says it supports.

I understand being busy. I'm quite grateful that you're helping me.

I tried all the emulations and printed the list of the machine's internal fonts to see how each font looks. *** Should "Courier New" be on the list? It's not.

I'm doing the firmware update now to see how that helps.
