So I phoned them from my mobile while he was there and then put them onto speaker as they confirmed that the key was not a proper licence for a home user and to tell the store that they have sold a wrong licence, and they would send a certificate confirming that.

I also told him about my complaint to Trading Standards (and lied saying they think that the store might be deliberately selling illegal software) and will be investigating for that.

The manager then decided to give me a different copy and to take it up with MS through their wholesaler. I just put the new code in AND IT WORKS

I took some pictures of the bad disk and packaging but I don't know howto attach them on here. It looks 100% identical to the one I have replaced it with. So weird.
FYI to attach to post just use the paper clip>browse to file or picture>upload and attach

I am so glad you got the problem resolved without having to pay more money. Good work and good persistence.

great read, pity you had to jump through so many hoops to get a result though. i guess thats one of the resulst of software piracy, everybody is suspicious of anythign not quite kosher and simply assume you're a crook rather than look at the facts!
i had to reinstall my copy of windows 7 within a week of first activating and lost count of the times i was asked if it ws installed on more than one computer, is this the only copy you will be installing, are there any other copies etc etc!

It think the problem may have been that to legally use a volume license you have to upgrade from an older OP system. Not to mention the requirement for having 5 other upgraded PC's in the network was not met.

I won't get into the fact that clearly the Cd was mislabled and in the wrong box to begin with.

Windows licenses available through Volume Licensing are upgrade-only licenses

They do not replace purchasing the initial Windows licenses for software that comes pre-installed on new PCs. Each desktop that runs the Windows 7 upgrade must first be licensed to run one of the qualifying operating systems—otherwise the PC will not have a valid, legal Windows license.
