If windows is activated "illegally" it'll be activated but not validated/genuine.

I'm dealing now with the provider.
That would explain it... sounds like your client got busted...

in this case the buck will stop with me. I'll convert it back to the original spec as it left Dell, and take the hit.

There are a LOT of grayware Win7 licenses on machines being pedaled on Ebay, and in some cases the seller is unaware of it. In fact one such seller MAY be Dell... that is Dell Financial Services. I inquired in my standard fashion about the licenses for Win7 that were associated with off-lease or otherwise owned systems being dumped by DFS, and the answer I got was "we know nothing about the Windows 7 that is on these machines" .... in otherwords, "don't tell" and ... "we wish you would 'don't ask' .." .

But the idea that Microsoft somehow prohibits OEM licenses from re-use on hardware other than the original is mistaken. I shall not take the time to dig up my long post on this, but I'm surprised that good folks still spread that idea. The people I spoke with were very clear - no problems with moving from one to another, just make sure that if its KMS it gets reactivated by the original server, and 1-machine, 1-license, as always. I inquired about whether [as someone on Sevenforums asserted in the other thread] the Ts & C's restrict what an OEM/Vol-license-holder may DO with the systems that they put the OS on. The answer is a solid "NO". There's nothing in their terms that restricts the intermediaries from reselling machines a dozen times if they want to. Hardware gets changed. Stuff happens. Capacitors blow out [yay Dell....] - none of that neuters the good license that someone paid good money for.

in the present case, this one is clearly a 'bad' win7 Ultimate oem license that was graywared apparently way back early in Windows 7 days... I got stuck. the oddity is that the same system has a perfectly good legitimate Office Pro 2010 license - everything just dandy.
Go figure.

that appears to be the case bill.
apparently there is some successful hackery programs out there that can do "presto!" and make an illegitimate copy pass the current crop of builtin validation routines.
all over youtube etc etc.... One of them bravely has a Website up and running, almost looks legit - go there and download your 'activate/validate' solution.
