Contact the company you purchased your computer from. In order to get an OEM volume license from Microsoft, computer manufacturers are required to provide a windows disk to their customers, if requested by the customer.

Citation ... please.

My understanding is different (and it may be wrong) in that all the OEM is required to do is provide the customer a way to restore the machine to its original condition, NOT to provide an actual disk to do this. Thus, if they configure a function key to launch an application that restores the machine from a compressed Windows image stored on the HDD -- they have met their requirement.

You could be right... But I'm never failed to persuade a manufacturer to send me a disk after explaining to them the system can no longer be booted to the recovery partition. Some companies charge for a copy of the recovery disk, but not all of them

Sorry ... looks like I misunderstood what you were claiming. Thought you were claiming that the OEM was REQUIRED to provide a free disk upon request.

Some will, like you say, but in most cases (at least those I've dealt with), they won't unless you pay them for it.

Others (in my experience, HP is an example) won't provide a disk no matter what you do.

But then, as they say, your mileage may vary ...
