I'm sure you're just being padantic here but surely you'd know that safe mode with networking allows you to run in safe mode and still access the internet...lol

Prime example of this is being able to access google in your internet browser

I don't feel I need to lower myself enough to comment on the last quote

In answer to the OP's issue...

I would boot normally and check the updates that are showing as available and also what updates have been installed (Control panel -> Programs -> View installed updates).

If any of the updates in Windows Update are appearing as 'Installed' then Uninstall the update (click the update and select 'Uninstall'). This will/should force Windows to re download/install the update.

Hope it helps

Different

Thanks to everyone for replying so quickly. The set up of my Windows Update appears to be different to that described on the Microsoft help pages etc, e.g.:

- under my update history there is neither a red nor a green icon under Status, just the word Successful

- the guidelines for troubleshooting failed updates therefore do not apply since they are not registered as failed

- when I go to Installed Updates in order to try deleting an update, the update which on the previous page was listed as successfully installed, is not listed at all

- examining the log file i.e. %Windir%\KBnnnnnn.log replacing the nnnnnn with the appropriate numbers, returns nothing at all

- although my Automatic Updates are set to On, I am unable to locate or download the Malicious Software Removal Tool

- I have scanned with Windows Defender and it found no problems

Incidentally I have tried hiding updates that are already 'installed' and that takes care of the immediate problem, however as soon as there is a new update to install the problem starts all over again!

Any ideas?

Thanks
Simon

Start>>Search and type MRT

However there are better tools e.g Windows Live OneCare Windows Live OneCare safety scanner: Free online tool for PC health and safety

Have you tried also reset system transaction logs too (post 3)?

I experience the exact same thing. The troubleshooting steps through MS support IMHO have not caught up to Win 7. Luckily I have found this wonderful forum!
