Windows Update failed!!

I 'foolishly' had windows update set to auto-install important updates. I've got 3 updates that have failed on Win7-64 Pro. Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800705b4: Update for Internet Explorer 8 Compatibility View List for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2362765). Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800705b4: Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2158563). Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800705b4: Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB979538). I just tried to use Windows Update, it has been running for maybe 40 minutes. I have internet connectivity. I also see these other errors in the event log: Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at: with error: A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the timestamp in the signed file. Fault bucket 1394862642, type 5 Event Name: WindowsUpdateFailure Response: Not available Cab Id: 0 Problem signature: P1: 7.3.7600.16385 P2: 800705b4 P3: C3F67736-8B61-4922-A577-E6D8A32ACE84 P4: Install P5: 101 P6: Unmanaged P7: P8: P9: P10: How can I resolve this? I've tried rebooting. It now takes about 15 minutes to boot while telling me 'configuring windows update 0% complete. Do not turn off your computer. Thanks!

If you have in event viewer any CAPI2 error (I'm not sure) then solution is here:Event ID 4107 or Event ID 11 is logged in the Application log in Windows Vista, in Windows Server 2008, and in later versions of Windows and of Windows Server

Thanks! I can't do much at the moment. Windows update hung for over an hour, so I tried to reboot. It's been hung for 15 minutes shutting down. I NEVER had issues like this on XP (which I still run as my main box). This is very depressing.

Had the same problem today, auto update failed for three updates. I did a manual update through Tools and windows update and they updated with no problem. The auto update failed three times. Hope this helps.

Well, it took exactly an hour to reboot. While I was messing with it before, I 'upgraded' to Microsoft update (or whatever it is called where it looks for other MS products). This time, I did a Windows update (didn't see a Microsoft Update in my Start menu), it installed the 3 updates, and rebooted, and worked like a charm. Go figure!!!

I had the same problem, the automatic updater installed, then the system would hang on reboot for about 25 min, and report an update failure after rolling back the system. Using the manual update from the start->all programs->windwos update worked fine.

Just had a harrowing update - hung on the reboot system with "Configuring Windows" frozen at 0%- hard booted to normal, updated to 51% and system self rebooted and besides some quirky internet issues at first I guess everything alright - it didn't do the MSE optional update which I checked.

I hate to say it but Windows Updates as of late put me on the edge of my seat, why?

Thanks for posting this thread, and for your update, 7powerWannabe. I had the same issue, with shorter but still very long times at the 0% updating screen, and found the same errors in the Event Viewer.

Manually running Windows Update from the start menu resolved the issue for me also.

The thing that really bothers me is that I had my updates set to only automatically download, and to NOT automatically install. I am 100% certain I did not confirm the installation of these updates on my previous boot, and no one else uses this PC. A bit unsettling...

I also have experience the same problem. In the last two days, windows update keeps trying to nstalli updates on shutdown and configure them on boot up. It takes forever! It worked fine before. Microsoft, ARE YOU LISTING? What was in the last update? Are you/they going to fix this problem. Otherwise, Windows Update is history.
