    Thanks! IT WORKED!

Your advice on going to the start menu and running windows update manually worked! All the updates are installed and now it is not constantly trying to install, configure (and fail) new updates!

I will now disable the automatic windows update and run it manually for now. Microsoft's automatic windows update should not have been released.

There's an update (kb2158563) to reset the system clock for the new daylight savings time, which will eliminate the problem. Install that first, then proceed with any other updates

I 'foolishly' had windows update set to auto-install important updates. I've got 3 updates that have failed on Win7-64 Pro. Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800705b4: Update for Internet Explorer 8 Compatibility View List for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2362765). Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800705b4: Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2158563). Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800705b4: Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB979538). I just tried to use Windows Update, it has been running for maybe 40 minutes. I have internet connectivity. I also see these other errors in the event log: Failed extract of third-party root list from auto update cab at: with error: A required certificate is not within its validity period when verifying against the current system clock or the timestamp in the signed file. Fault bucket 1394862642, type 5 Event Name: WindowsUpdateFailure Response: Not available Cab Id: 0 Problem signature: P1: 7.3.7600.16385 P2: 800705b4 P3: C3F67736-8B61-4922-A577-E6D8A32ACE84 P4: Install P5: 101 P6: Unmanaged P7: P8: P9: P10: How can I resolve this? I've tried rebooting. It now takes about 15 minutes to boot while telling me 'configuring windows update 0% complete. Do not turn off your computer. Thanks!
I encountered the same update problem for Windows 7 PRO 32 and 64 bit (KB979538) and (KB2158563) and 64 bit (KB2362765). Updates were being installed on shutdown and then restart would indicate configuring updates for many minutes and finally state configuration failed, reverting updates. I then manually installed (KB2362765) from control panel and restarted OK. Then manually installed
(KB979538) and (KB2158563) from control panel and restarted OK. All updates on both systems (32 and 64 bit) indicated successful installation on update history log.

I'm not so trusting of Microsoft on updates any longer so I changed update setting to "Check for updates but let me choose whetner to download and install them."

This helped me out as I was experincing the exact error code, I'm sure of that. I run 32 bit but this seems to be a problem on both systems in updates right now.

By manually installing then restarting it worked... as usually when shutting down and doing the updating when I turn back on it stays at 0 Percent which then ends in fail reverting back to the other settings but this worked.
