Windows Update failing every time now

I have Build 7000 and now every time I install an update it fails. Anyone have a fix for this?

could you be a bit more specific? Do you mean windows update? does the same one or different updates fail? Also dont forget win 7 7000 (beta) is gonna start timing out at the beginning of July so you might want to update to RC1 and see if the problem follows you or disappears. Good Luck, I hope this helped somewhat.

Keep in mind Build 7000 is going to start shutting down July 1 so you need to grab build 7100 (or later) when you get a couple of hours.

I wonder if the beta is just not being supported or is just buggy with updates.

Can I just install one of the newer builds over the 7000 build without wiping out all my programs, the way you could do that in XP?

Upgrading from win 7 beta to RC1

there is a way to upgrade from beta to rc1. It involves a little tweaking though. In whatever version you want to upgrade to you need to edit a file called cversion.ini. Instructions can be found here: Make Tech Easier - How to Upgrade Windows 7 Beta To Windows 7 RC1 Without Formatting Your Hard Disk

Just realize that you might be bringing your problems with you. It usually better (but much more work) to do a clean install. Especially with win7 and vista the size of the winsxs folder just keeps on growing if you dont do a clean install. A machine I fixed had a 12 gb winsxs folder and vista was 21 g

Good point about the clean install. I usually do this but I have everything the way I want it set up and not wanting to spend the rest of the weekend tweaking and re-installing programs and user ID's and passwords etc.

Is the winsxs file directly related to the hiberfil.sys file that keeps growing in Vista? I hope there is a solution to keep it from ever expanding.

    winsxs

Winsxs is a function of how many apps you install. It keeps the various versions of dll's etc that each app needs. Unfortunately it doesn't shrink when you un-install the app. On an X86 clean install it starts abt 4 gigs. By the time you install all the stuff you want it grows (mine is abt 8 gigs) huge. I have seen folders over 20 gigs on systems where someone installs every thing they could think of to try. What I usually do is do a clean install then do a backup (norton ghost or whatever) that way the next time you want a clean vanilla system you can just restore the backup.
