    Are old Office updates necessary?

I just bought a new PC and reinstalled Office 2007 on it. Naturally, I had to go through the process of downloading and installing all Office updates since my version was released and that went fine however, today Windows Update is notifying me of several security updates for Office 2003. Do I really need those please?

no i don't think you need office 2003 updates for your 2007 software.

to be certain, what exactly are these updates for?

there is a problem with office updates - even with the 2010 version - i only have word, excel and access installed, but keep getting offered updates for outlook junk email filter, powerpoint etc

It just says they are all security updates (see attached screenshot). And yes, I'm sure everyone that doesn't use the full Office suite will agree with you because I'm always being offered updates for programs I don't even have installed.

if you are certain you have no office 2003 software installed (such as word viewers or anything else), then i would say that it is safe to right-click these updates and hide them, so you do not see them again.

I have FrontPage 2003 but I bought that separately, not as a part of the Office suite, although I'm not sure it was ever part of Office.

you can easily google the KBxxxxxx numbers, and see if any refer to frontpage.

Indeed, only one of them concerned FrontPage so I have hidden the rest. Thanks Mickey! :)
