cheers.. but it didnt quite work

"4) Select the check box for Use automatic configuration script.
    5) Copy the URL that is shown in the Address box below the check box. Paste it somewhere that you can retrieve it from later (in case you want to restore this setting when you are done installing WIndows Live)"

there was nothing in the box below anyway, but i still carried on, still no luck

Maybe you have a firewall/antivirus program blocking it?

Can't you just disable it for the time you download Live Messenger?

Maybe you can check this thread: Live Essentails Beta install error

Some people found a solution there using a modified download script and Windows Live Solution Center is working on a solution for the others.

    This one? Using http://www.enccompany.com/microsoft/...installfix.exe worked.

And also this one? Then tried same with proxy field (was populated, though disabled) and finally selected "auto configure" (as opposed to auto proxy).
THIS THEN allowed me to install. -- so I think there are more issues in this area than just the auto proxy script
