Are you using any bootloader other than the windows default one (e.g grub loader etc...)?
Run SFC SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Turn on System protection if it is off System Protection - Turn On or Off

80040005 means "E_FAIL", or unknown error. The best bet right now is to review your cbs.log to see what happened during the install.

I'm glad that some of us starting having the same error on their machine...looks the same on others forums.

I do not feel that alone and solutions might pop-up soon.

Some of told here are right, Sfc /Scannow + a little bit of clean, you can also apply the kb947821

Try to install the SP1 pack without the kb976902 and if the error persist, install that kb, then again SP1.

There is a conflict during the install, the Servive Pack 1 doesn't find the registry path correctly.

I have had this exact problem and decided (after doing it easily on a 32 bit machine installed and running perfectly) to slipstream this SP1 with RT 7 (NB slipstreaming only available on 2.6 beta NOT the default, stable version) and spring clean.

It showed "invalid data error" twice so, I am guessing, some versions of this 64bit SP1 may have become corrupted.

I must stress that slipstreaming the 32 bit version was very slow but otherwise painless.

(I used the version from softpedia - but I am going to try another one now)

So far a different (torrent) download is slipstreaming fine...I will try to apply it later.

Torrent was exactly the same file, but in one piece rather than a 7 part rar file.

    Slipstreamed and installed perfectly...
