Thats right, you dont need to do anything special, it'll just work out of the box.

will the time taken for installation and number of restarts during installation be more?

Dont think it would be wildly different but think of it this way- if you're not using sp1 integrated dvd, you'll need to run the sp1 exe separately everytime you do a format which would be even more of a hassle.

You could try manually if you haven't already. This seems to be a pretty good tutorial: SP1 slipstreaming guide
Hmm, that sounds kind of complicated, but I suppose I could keep it in mind. Might just wait until the Win 7 SP1 image appears on Technet downloads.

Technet forums are looking at my CBS logs and at present are trying to blame the Windows Mail hack although I know for a fact that it simply rewrote that msoe.dll in my successful PC SP1 install attempts.

OK that's the background....

Now for RT 7 Lite x64..... I get "Service pack integration failed" repeatedly. Using an x86 ISO for the original and the x86 .exe for the SP. (Netbook isn't 64-bit).

I figured that, if I can make a successful integrated DVD for the OS, then I could simply do an in situ repair/upgrade install.

But it appears that the Win 7 Gods are conspiring against me.
Are you trying to integrate the x86 SP1 on a 64 bit machine? Thats not possible, you need to run RT7lite on a 32 bit machine to integrate the 32 bit pack.

As for the sp1 direct install error, I'm sure technet forums will come up with something but take a look at these 2 threads.

Vista SP2 update: error E_FAIL(0×80004005) caused by SYSHIPER 0x80071a91- solved! « The Wiert Corner – irregular stream of Wiert stuff

To work around this issue, turn off the computer and physically unplug all drives that are not required for starting Windows. Power up the computer and restart the service pack installation.

If the workaround is not successful, the alternative is to perform a clean-install.
The above quote is MS's solution, see here.

Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 service pack installation fails with error 0x80004005

You could also check whether you had the SP1 beta installed previously? You'd need to cleanup that.
OK thanks. The first one isn't too clear on whether you create a new key or a new Dword and what value to give it....any ideas on that? Also that is for Vista so may not work.

The second one - no other drives or 'bits' were attached anyway.

Technet forums thus far can only come up with format and reinstall...grrr.

RT Seven Lite contacted me this morning about the slipstream failure...after explaining the whole thing on a ticket submission they asked 'are you having trouble installing RT Seven Lite or the Service Pack?"... at which I gave out a very loud sigh.

As I say, the netbook is obviously being pernickity so may have to wait for the integrated download to appear on Technet and then try an in situ repair/upgrade.

Bill2,

Nice thoughts, thank you, but there is no mention of syshiper in the CBS.log or the Cbspersist log.. (To read it one has to copy it to the desktop first FYI to anyone who tries it).

I don't think that is correct. The other way around perhaps, but doing a 32-bit integration on a 64-bit machine shouldn't be a problem. If it is I'd like you to point me to where it says that.

Last question....the service pack file that RT7 refers to IS the .exe file right?

I suppose I could try doing this in Vista (only got x64, sorry) but I've read and re-read the product pages and still can't figure out why the heck I need to install WAIK on Vista...for what?..... and I certainly don't need to install Virtual-anything as I'm not tailoring the OS and no need to test it.

The only x86 machine I have is the netbook and I can well imagine that churning away for years doing this job with its limited resources. But I do have an external DVD burner so may well have to resort to that.

Let's hope that's true. I can't cope with all this...LOL.

As if this isn't enough now I have to update my graphics drivers on 4 systems.

Yep my bad, you should be able to use a 32 bit pack on a 64 bit machine. And yes, the RT7 is looking for the sp .exe you downloaded.

OK, listen I'm going to try out integration manually, will let you know how it works.
