    Windows behave misteriously

I have had windows installed and running for as long as win 7 was released. Recently however i an observing some random behaviors:

-Windows update page doesn't start. Just shows the window outline and loading mouse icon forever

    - Similar behavior with windows restore

    - Windows never shuts down and the blue shutting down screen stays forever

    - Windows security essential update hangs

    - Cannot install a lot of new programs like dropbox. It saiz installed properly but never runs.

    -chkdsk on CMD never initializes.

I dont know if the behaviors are linked however they all seen to have appeared suddenly. Problem is i cannot restore or run antivirus. Any suggestions.

    Hi,

Open an elevated Command Prompt (Click Start Orb, type cmd in the search box, then right-click on cmd as choose Run as administrator)

    In the cmd window type:

    sfc /scannow

It may take some time so let it run till completion. Post the results here when it is finished, and we can tackle the issue further.

    Regards,
    Golden

Thanks for the quick reply. After running the command you mention i get this:

"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

    Dont know what that means.

It means your core files are where they are supposed to be and in the condition they are supposed to be in.

If your copy of windows is as old as you say, have you done any regular custodial duties like defragging, registry scans, junk file removal etc..?

My favorite scanner is malwarebytes antimalware. It's free unless you want real time protection out of it. Sometimes being locked out of core system items is an indication of a virus. Are you able to open msconfig?

MSCONFIG opens fine. I am guessing its more a windows problem than a virus or driver. Running windows in safemode responded the same. I would have tried installing windows again but sadly dont have a cd for it.

If you are unable to install and scan with malwarebytes.
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes
I would actually blame a virus. I'm speculating at this point though, need more information.
Best way to install mbam is in safe mode with networking, so it can grab it's updates after install.

Registry cleaners often cause more harm than good, sometimes even resulting in issues such as you describe.

Although some are far worse than others.

Win7 doesnt really need anything done to the registry to be maintained. Temp File cleanups with something like Ccleaner or the built in DiskCleanup is sufficient.

Although registry entries being dleted that shouldn't have, may not be your problem, its a possibility.
