Hi there
nearly every laptop I've used works just fine with the GENERIC synaptics driver.
Actually for laptops I always set the driver to popup options on boot so I can usually disable it.
On a lot of laptops when using a mouse sometimes the cursor jumps all over the place at random intervals making sensible data entry almost impossible when the original driver was present.
The GENERIC driver cures this problem in 99% of cases but for really awkward laptops just disable the touchpad driver totally --I prefer a mouse any day even on the move and a small wireless mouse isn't a problem accessory to carry with the laptop.
Get the driver from the synaptics site and ensure the options are selected for your laptop correctly
Cheers
