Hmmmm, a lot of people are having trouble downloading SP1. (See the OnTheRopes' post above you where I just posted these same tutorials.) And as I said to OnTheRopes, if these tutorials don't solve your specific installation problem, hopefully they will lead you to other tutorials that will help.
From Microsoft - Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
SP 1 - INSTALLATION FAILURES
From Microsoft - Installation of the Service Pack 1 update package for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 fails with "Service pack installation can't continue"

From Microsoft - Why am I receiving a message about Microsoft Security Essentials or Microsoft Forefront Client Security when installing a service pack?
From Microsoft - re: Microsoft Security Essentials - If you do not have version 1.0.1963.0 or later installed, upgrade using the instructions in KB2254596 (You are prompted to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Security Essentials (1.0.1963.0)) , or launch Microsoft Update and install the update or a newer version from there. (Why am I receiving a message about Microsoft Security Essentials or Microsoft Forefront Client Security when installing a service pack?)
Thanks Imperfect1
I have seen these and tried to follow all the instructions but with the same outcome
When trying to load from the downloaded file, it takes ages and appears almost to get there, but still fails with the same error message.
Thanks again.
Disable Norton's fire wall and enable Windows firewall through services. Also make sure you have cleaned all temps.
Unplug any USB devices, such as printer or external hard drive. Try again.
Hi,
You may want to try the following...
Run an InPlace Upgrade [1][2] to repair your windows. Your programs are still usable after doing the InPlace upgrade. This should repair all missing/damaged files.
Now install the Sp1.
[1] How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2
[2] Repair Install
Thanks Jacee and Orbital Shark.
I'll try each of these in turn and post back results!
read this and follow my advice
I just went through this here you go
"WindowsUpdate_80073712" "WindowsUpdate_dt000"
Hello again.
Really frustrating. I have tried everything suggested here apart from the Repair Windows option.
Is it time to repair do you think? Or is it best to wait until a revised SP1 is issued?
Hi Slater. Sorry you are having such a hard time with SP1. I had the same problem and same error code. I am curious if when you run sfc /scannow as an administrator, does it give you a clean bill of health. I've been told that if you cannot get a clean SFC run you will never be able to install SP1. Let us know.
Cheers

Hi.
Well it scans and the says "did not find any violations".
So on the surface that seems all clear??
