Same Frozen Black Screen after Repair to Factory

It didn't work. Got the exact same screen in the end. Any chance
you have some other ideas?

Not really no I take it that was ALT +F10 that you did

Then have a look here; How to Restore an Acer Computer to Factory Settings | eHow.com
Always make a back-up CD before restoring a computer to factory defaults.

thank you for continuing to help me...unfortunately that post assumes
I can get to my start menu. I can't...just a frozen black screen with
the personalized settings message. I also can't make a back up for the same
reason, but I'm ok on that end. I just need to get the thing running.

I also install sp1 yesterday and got the windows media player setting page upon reoot. Neither of which has caused me any problems, including using sharks codecs.

Have you tried using these discs? as I believe they should also help to restore to the factory image
