SP1 ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY MISSING (080073701)

My first error trying to install SP1 was 490, unknown error which was caused be missing and damaged files but fixed all of them. SFC and SUR find no error. Then I get the 800F0A12 error, go the answers to solve that one.

Now it starts the install, runs for 16 minutes and gives an ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY MISSING 80073701. Again, SFC and find no error. I’m not trying the WU but the downloaded file although WU returns the same error also.

Something about a print driver and a %windir%\winsxs\pending.xml.bad file. Not sure if I’m supposed to have that file, if so I don’t!

Here’s the section of the CBS.log with the error:

I only have the OEM Recovery disc or a factory installed OS! From what I've read about this particular error since I posted here, it isn't going to be a simple fix. I read about one guy who has tried 35 times to install SP1 on a bunch of boxes. Even on a clean install of W7, no go. The only thing that worked was from a clean install of W7 but don't allow any updates to install prior to trying SP1.

I've been trying to install SP1 from a download but I tried from WU and get the same error number but the WU logs shows that it failed during download which sounds correct since it happens shortly after starting.

I downloaded the ISO version to try that. It may just a coincident but ImgBurn hangs on erasing a DVD+RW now. I uninstalled/reinstalled with no change. No problem burning to the same disc from other apps. It will erase a CD-RW though. I have the latest version, so no help there. I posted this issue in their forum. I have read somebody else say that these repeaded SP1 installs attempts have jacked their system up.

Yes, I do and from what I've read that could be the problem.

As I see it there are three options
The first is a repair install this is only an option if you can get hold of a Windows x64 pro DVD.
Second is to work your way through the options on the link that I posted, you may find the answer there
Third is to reset your system back to the Factory image, I guess by using the recovery disc
YOU WILL NEED TO BACKUP YOUR PERSONAL FILES the best way to do this is with an external HDD

I believe there is a forth option. To wait for MS to sort out their mess.

I have to go through that entire link but some of the suggestions are as drastic as restoring my system, going through and uninstalling every installed KB. The error seems to be somewhat generic from looking at some of the CBS logs posted. Nobody has the same exact problem area just same description and error number.

Still wondering if SP1 failed attempts damaged ImgBurn for good?

Thanks for your suggestions!

BTW: Have you installed SP1?
