    Windows Update Error

    Hi,

I'm in the last stages of reinvigorating a friends PC, and have had some problems with Windows Update.

As it stands, this system is using Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64.

The error I get is shown in the attached image.

I have run the Windows Update Troubleshooter which reports that the error has been fixed (see image), but if I immediately go and re-run Windows Update, the same message appears.

I have checked for C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log but it doesn't appear to exist.

I am trying to run the Windows Update from a standard user account.

Can anyone suggest a possible fix?

    Thanks,
    Golden

Just out of curiosity, does it happen from an administrative account?

Did you try the WU update FixIT from MS? How do I reset Windows Update components?

    Hi,

Thanks for both suggestions Clinkz and TCG.

I haven't tried WU from the administrator account yet, as I wanted to be sure it would still run under standard user account - I'll try WU under admin account now. If that doesn't work, I'll try the FIXIT link.

    Hello!

    No problem, Golden!

You say that you are trying to run Windows Update from a Standard Account. Does it work in an Admin Account. You see, have a look at how the error maps (winerror.h):

    Code:
    C:\Users\Richard>err 80070005
    # for hex 0x80070005 / decimal -2147024891 :
      COR_E_UNAUTHORIZEDACCESS corerror.h
    # MessageText:
    # Access is denied.
      DIERR_OTHERAPPHASPRIO dinput.h
      DIERR_READONLY dinput.h
      DIERR_HANDLEEXISTS dinput.h
      DSERR_ACCESSDENIED dsound.h
      ecAccessDenied ec.h
      ecPropSecurityViolation ec.h
      MAPI_E_NO_ACCESS mapicode.h
      STIERR_READONLY stierr.h
      STIERR_NOTINITIALIZED stierr.h
      E_ACCESSDENIED winerror.h
    # General access denied error
    # 11 matches found for "80070005"

    C:\Users\Richard>
    Generic Access Denied message:

    Code:
      E_ACCESSDENIED winerror.h
    # General access denied error
Depending on whether Windows Update works in the Admin account, and whether you want it to work on the Standard Account directs my next response.

    Thanks!

    Guys,

I am officially a muppet! I was logged in and attempting WU using the admin account and not a standard account

The WU problem persists in the admin account.

TCG : I just noticed that the FIXIT link you provided is for Vista SP2. Does it still work under 7?

    Hello again, Golden!

First, two simple solutions. Credit to @TCG and @Clinkz.

Run this tool in Standard Mode (ie not Aggressive Mode yet). It is perfectly safe on both Vista and 7. Ignore the "incompatible" message on 7. How do I reset Windows Update components?

This takes only half a second, and has fixed a few issues before now: Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility | The Windows Club

Just for the information of others, CheckSUR.log is the log file created by the System Update Readiness Tool. Unless that tool has been run, you will not have that log. How to troubleshoot Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 service pack installation issues

Please do run it now. It may help a lot, as it can detect some permissions problems.

Also, the CBS.log is very useful. Please run the System Update Readiness Tool (just install the update, and wait while it does all of its work at 60%) and then create a new folder on your Desktop. Copy into that folder C:\Windows\Logs\CBS.log and C:\Windows\Logs\CheckSUR.persist.log. Right click on that folder > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload that file here.

    Thanks!

    Richard

@Golden: According to the technet article I saw, that link will work for 7 although it does not actually state it.

Any progress on this Golden? Curios to hear what happened.

    Hi,

OK. I ran FIXIT in non-aggressive mode, but that same problems still persists. I also tried the WU Tool that Clinz suggested, but the same error persists.

    Attached are the CBS logs.
