taskeng.exe opening in a Command Prompt window

Just now, I was reading posts here when a Command Prompt (black) windows opened, titled taskeng.exe.

This is the Task Scheduler, right? Why is it opening a Command Prompt window, never did this before. I noticed The Windows update icon is now in the System area of the TaskBar, so I suspect it was Automatic Updates kicking in, but why the black CP window?

Edit: Good grief, 22 new updates!!!

I just found this in Task Scheduler, triggered to run every night at 9:10PM.

    cmd /c move /Y \\webserver\dell_i\TestFolder\* d:\temp\junk

It must have been something I setup though I have no memory of doing it. Probably while trying to figure out how to do something for a forum response here or in one of the other forums I work at.

Disabled it so I think this problem is resolved.

I had exactly the same problem when task-scheduling a BATch file to do backups, with a Command Prompt window appearing with taskeng.exe in the title and staying until the backup finished.

Rather than not running the file, I found Hstart (Hidden Start) which solves the problem quite nicely.

In the Action of the scheduled task, I just needed to change
    D:\BAT\PSTcopy.bat
    to
    <Hstart path>\Hstart64.exe /noconsole D:\BAT\PSTcopy.bat

John, this was resolved back in April.

Also don't understand what Hstart has to do with it. I was not looking for a way to schedule something, but what was causing the taskeng.exe window to open.

I just happened to get a taskeng.exe window opening when a scheduled BATch file ran. The function of Hstart is to prevent the taskeng.exe window from opening. It does this!

I see. From the link you provided:
Hidden Start - Run Applications and Batch Files without a Console Window or UAC Prompt
Are you associated with them in any way? It costs $19.95 to buy it, it's not free.

Also, hiding the taskeng.exe window would have prevented me from finding the real cause which was a scheduled task I did not know about.

No, I'm not associated in any way - I only program BATch files!

It seems that the command-line utility is free. The GUI appears to be chargeable.

I found a thread dealing with the question of payment for Hstart - or not! It's a pity that the website itself isn't clearer.

That is very clear. Would be nice to have it so on the web site as you said. Thanks again.
