Windows 7 SP1 Upgrade: Error C000009A

Hi, everyone. I am trying to update my copy of Windows 7 Ultimate to SP1. In doing this, I get the following error message:

Error C000009A applying update operation 109008 or 265936 (\Registry\...)

Does anyone know what the problem is? I have tried booting into safe mode to find out more, but it freezes while booting.

You might see if this may be able to help. The hotfix below must be installed before installing the SP1 with this error.

"0xC0000009A" error message when you try to install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Thank you for your response. Do you know how I can install the fix if I'm unable to boot into safe mode?

I might have missed something, but ... I don't see where it says to install the hotfix in safe mode.

Jacee is correct. If you are able to boot into Windows 7, then you would just need to install the hotfix from within Windows 7. Afterwards you are suppose to be able to install SP1.

When I boot into normal Windows 7, it immediately tries to run the SP1 upgrade and returns the error. When I try to boot into safe mode to install the hotfix, it freezes while loading apmwin.sys. Is there any other way that I can install software? Is there a way that I can skip the update when booting into normal Windows 7?

You might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you tried to install the SP1. Afterwards, see if you may be able to install the hotfix in Windows 7, then the SP1 again.

I checked, and unfortunately I do not have a very recent restore point. Is there any way that I can use my Windows 7 install DVD to run the hotfix's .msu file?

Looking at this link below, this issue seems to be caused by a language pack that you have installed. Since you cannot boot into Windows 7, other than a System Restore, you may need to do a custom install of Windows 7. It will give you a clean install with a copy of your current installation placed in the C:\Windows.old folder afterwards in the new installation that you can copy what files you want back into the new installation.
