actually, we already have a winner. The "un-check auto detect" thing worked. Well, it actually didn't. but then I rebooted and re-checked the auto detect settings, including re-checking something in DNS for IPv4 and IPv6.
We're all updated now.

Thanks for the help!

Nice work !!! You are most welcome.

As to the 'DNS setting', are you referring to Local Area Connection Properties >
IPv4 Properties and IPv6 Properties

Checked are ' Obtain an IPv4 ( or 6 ) address automatically '
and ' Obtain DNS server address automatically' ?

IE>Internet Options>Connections>Settings>(uncheck) Automatically Detect Settings>Properties>Networking>TCP/IPv4>Properties>Advanced>(uncheck) Use default gateway on remote network.
Ok>ok>TCP/IPv6>Properties>Advanced>(uncheck) Use default gateway on remote network.

Click OK on everything, exit IE and reboot. Try Windows Update. For me I got same error code, but it did not disconnect internet connection.
Then I repeated the steps above, but RE-CHECKED everything I'd unchecked. tried it and it failed. Said I wasn't connected even though I was.
At this point I closed browser and disconnected internet connection. Re-connected i.c. and tried Windows Update again. It worked at this point.

I don't know if "Use default gateway on remote network" did anything. But I figured unchecking all that might work like clearing cookies and browser cache.

Thanks for taking the time to post the steps that you used. Let's hope that this month's massive round of updates doesn't reset anything back to what it was.

that may or may not have happened already. A new gremlin has arose. One that disconnects internet every 3-5 minutes.

Were updates installed before the new gremlin appeared ?

If no updates were installed, then you should start a new thread on the Network & Sharing forum.

If updates were installed, then please post which ones by using the View update history link of Windows Update in Control Panel.

Heroic effort.

What I would do in a case like this is find a Win7 installer for your version and clean reinstall without the preinstalled bloatware and useless factory utiltiies, using the Product Key on COA sticker: Reinstalling Windows 7

I have never let an Acer go without a clean reinstall out of the box so I dont' remember if they have the network or wireless manager crapware as other models do. That would be suspect if so.

Before Reinstalling,(seen to many bad HD on Acer's.)
Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

Ok so........

kept having dropt connection issues, but not surrounding Windows Update. Sometimes, it'd stay connected for 3 hrs. Sometimes 3 minutes was a feat.

So the clean install and Win7 issues gave me an idea.

I happened to have a spare and clean hard drive with XP SP3 installed on it. So, I slapped that bad boy in and fired her up. Guess what happened?

The dropped connection issue during Windows Update re-appeared! Only this time, the fixes above didn't work. So, I'm thinking something hardware-related is wrong with the computer.
