Windows Update Error 80072F78

I'm posting again because something wiped out what I had written. I am getting error 80072F78 when trying to install 8 of 18 updates. I've tried several times, repaired the update module according to directions but I am still getting the error. Any suggestions on what to do?

Windows 7 64-bit.

Thanks James. I had already seen that and gone through all the suggestions. The time is fine in Windows and in the bios. Nothing is different and my other Win7 laptop (32-bit) updated just fine with no issues. I have no idea why Windows Update decided to act weird on this laptop. I'm still getting the error and I haven't had any connection issues. Everything is fast as usual.

If you haven't read it already, there is a discussion here that pertains to your issue. The original problem is from a few years, back, but the last post is from march 2011. Worth a shot.

That said, WU being disabled can also be malware or viruses. Regardless of the outcome, I recommend full scans (will take time) for malware and viruses. Free programs often recommended here are Malwarebytes and MSE. I've recently added SuperAntiSpyware to my mix and have found it to be very effective in exposing issues that MWB did not.

It wasn't malware or a virus. I am pretty fanatical about protection and rarely (really!) have any issues but I do know how to take care of them. I own Malwarebytes and Superantispyware and they scan constantly. I did figure out the only change I made after the last update was installing Eset NOD32 beta 5. I haven't had any updates since I had installed it so I uninstalled it and reinstalled the current version 4 and was able to download and install the latest updates with no problem.

I thought I'd come back and post the solution to my problem. Beta software really can get in the way!

Solved!

Thanks James! That is why I like to post any resolution I come up with. Sometimes I have to talk or type something to figure it out. I usually (almost always) do but it helps to have someplace to go get some feedback. I don't know everything and I like a place like this that has a multitude of information. Thanks!

Wow, I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why 8 (of 16) updates worked, and the other 8 give me error 80072F78. I too have ESET Nod32 Antivirus 5 Beta installed.

I will now go an report this bug to them.

Thanks!
