Hi - yes tried to install and windows says already installed but SP1 still fails.

So are you able to confirm that my choices are:

Revert to original config, install just those 3 updates and presumably re install all my software again.

Upgrade to Windows full home edition - would that eliminate this issue?

Not happy with Microsoft - the Netbook is only 4 weeks old and apart from installing initial programs (anti virus, network settings, firefox etc and some of my own games) is endlessly installing windows updates

I doubt that this updating issue is related to the edition of Windows that's installed. The most likely cause is antivirus software or a lack of free space on the Hard Drive.

And, yes, your least painless method to resolve the installation of SP1 is to use the recovery method of the netbook's manufacturer (OEM) to restore the system back to the state it was when it was first booted up.

Then download and save the full, standalone Windows 7 Service Pack 1 32-bit (x86) - Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
( windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe is the full, standalone for your system )

Ensure all drivers are up to date, then manually download, save, then install the TWO updates, KB2533552 and KB2534366. Install them in that order, individually, restarting between the installation of the 2 updates.

Next, create a folder on the root drive (the drive where Windows is installed to, which is usually the C:\ drive )and name it SP, Service Pack, or whatever suits your fancy. Move the manually downloaded and saved, standalone SP1 to the new folder.
Then install SP1 with all of the required restarts.

I disabled MS Sec Essentials realtime protection.

I have 37GB free - is that enough or do I need to re partition?
Loolks like full reversion is only option then.

Getting ready to start the long process.

Got the 3 updates ready and will install and reboot for each in turn and see what happens

Update.

Did the above steps after reverting to factory settings.

At last SP1 has installed and now putting anti virus on PC. Will spend the week installing all the other software.

Can you confirm that I should now carry on installing whatever updates Windows wants?

Really appreciate your help - big thank you.

Congratulations chrisreb!

I would say it is OK, but perhaps it would be best to let MowGreen confirm that.

OK thanks.

Would never have known that just 2 updates required before SP1 without all your help.

Sometime soon I hope to be able to use the Netbook for something other than Windows updates!

Update

Whilst backing up the Netbook having installed the basics I see Windows wants to install another 35 important updates -sigh!

Nice going chrisreb !

Please do NOT install 35 updates in one updating session. Install, at most, updates in groups of 5.
I'm not sure what Microsoft considers as Important but, since SP1 came out in February, some of the updates do not need to be installed.

Do NOT install .NET Framework 4 unless a program/application or website installs it in order for it to function properly.
Do not install .NET Framework 4 simply because Microsoft considers it "Important".

Unless you want to use it, do NOT install anything that starts with "Microsoft Live" simply because it's being offered.

Install .NET Framework updates along with other .NET Framework updates ONLY !

Install updates for Internet Explorer by themselves, too, along with no other updates.

Do NOT install any driver updates for hardware from Windows Update.
Either get them from the netbook's manufacturer or from the hardware manufactures' websites.
