Windows 7 updates setting changes not effective

windows 7 - 64 bit - home premium - I have changed my updates setting from automatic to manual but it is not effective. Every time I shut down my PC it installs updates. Each update takes up to 12 hours. I am so tired of it. The setting is set to manual but it seems to install updates automatically 100% of the time I shut down my PC.

The computer, Dell inspiron laptop is 60 days old and it did not do it int he beginning but now it does all the time.

It could be that a major group of updates are being downloaded in the background. When you shut down, Windows will install what it has and resume the download the next time you start up. There was a large group of updates released not too long ago. Otherwise, your change should take effect immediately.

Check your update history and see what has applied. You can also check the Action Center and see if more updates are coming. Might be a good time to "Hide" and/or disable the IE9 update.

Thank you Carwiz for quick reply. So this means that when I turn my PC on I should keep it on for a while so the downloads can take place while its on.

How do you hide or disable IE9 updates. I am using IE 8.

Do you use dial-up connection to the internet? If so, the recent updates will take quite some time to complete. There were a lot!

To hide IE9 update:
Go to> Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update
In the left panel, click on "Check for updates"
If the IE9 update shows in the list, uncheck then right click the line. Select "Hide" from the drop-down menu.
