Win 7 Home Premium 64 update problem
After downloading SP1 for Windows 7 64, it is sitting on the "Preparing to configure Windows... Do not turn off your computer" screen for 45 minutes. Anybody have any ideas why or suggestions?

My first guess is your security apps may be interfering with the update process I would have disabled them before starting, though you may still be able to do so now.
It finally just got off of that screen and rebooted after just over an hour and unfortunately it was at a screen where I wasn't able to do anything (just the blue background and the spinning circle). Kind of frustrating that it took so long, but at least it's off that screen! Thanks for your help.
There are some tutorials on preparing for sp1 update so it goes smoothly here.
Unfortunately you are already past the point where they would help.
Just be patient.
The downloading, installing & configuring of SP1 Win 7 has been noted to take anywhere from 1 hour to over 6 hours.

Well, after 6 1/2 hours to install etc what was supposed to be 87MB I finally have SP1 installed. I was sure I was going to have a bunch of broken software after that...........
This is true, despite me doing everything I could to prepare it my machine in the front room took roughly 4 hours to run the whole process.
Strangely on this one I don't seem to remember it taking more than about 15 or 20 minutes.
