    Will not boot after windows update.


    Hi everyone
    I have a windows 7 PC (full spec below)
    After running windows update the PC will not boot.
    It just sits on the loading screen doing nothing.
    I can boot in safe mode though.
    Running a system restore to before the update does nothing.
    Repair my computer also does nothing.

    I have reinstalled windows twice now and every time I run windows update the same thing happens.
    I dont want to have to disable windows update and going through the updates one by one could take forever. Especially since I'll have to reinstall windows when I find the killer update.
    I have installed all the driver updates, the .net updates and the security updates but theres still 19 left.
    If I dont run the update the PC keeps running fine and will reboot ok.
    Any idea how to repair the error wthout having to reinstall.

    Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P motherboard
    AM3 x3 CPU
    4GB OCZ RAM
    1TB WD HDD
    Windows 7 home premium 64bit

    Try uninstalling the problem update in safe mode.

    If that doesn't work, try doing a System Restore. Usually, a new restore point is created when installing a Windows update.

    Well it appears I've resolved the problem.
    I did two things differently.
    Firstly I changed the SATA mode to AHCI. It was set to Native IDE.
    I didnt expect this to make any difference but as I was going to reinstall anyway I thought it was worth a shot in case the update that was the killer was somehow related to SATA IDE mode.

    The other thing I did differently was to install the updates one at a time.
    This as you can imagine took forever but its worked.
    I now have an up to date system which will boot quite hapily (3 consecutive reboots so far)

    Through trial and error, I've found it is always best to restrict updates a few at a time rather than trying to install them all at once.

    Generally speaking, Windows Updates will flag up those that need to be installed on their own by leaving their check box empty until the checked ones have been installed.

    Those most problematic seem to be those connected with net framework downloads.

    Anyway, pleased to hear you seem to have resolved your problem.

    Yeah I've always found the more problematic ones are unchecked but this time it didnt seem to matter.
    Oh well all done now.
