    Updates not auto installing

    NOTE: This thread refers to this thread (I can't control the font size) --

    I am experiencing the same problem with Windows 7 automatic updates not installing automatically. Like Oldhead I have auto update and all users selected. Unlike Oldhead I have different software. I have three machines with this problem, but I will restrict my post to just one right now. This one machine (Dell studio XPS 8100 -- Dell - Studio XPS 8100 Desktop / Intel® Core™ i7 Processor / 8GB Memory / 1.5TB Hard Drive - SX8100-2777NBC) is running Windows 7 Home SP1 with Webroot (anti-virus). I do not have any of the other software running that Oldhead listed. I have followed JMH's advice. Status = Started & Startup Type = Automatic. I have run SFC 4 times. I have attached the first and last results. I also ran Check Disk. The first results are posted. The Check Disk results are now clear/nothing to resolve.

    I do not see any updates from Oldhead yet. What should be my next step? Has what I have done resolved the problem? In other words, were there errors found that caused my problem?

    Thank you in advance for the help.

    * You ask
    Has what I have done resolved the problem? In other words, were there errors found that caused my problem?

    *Test to see if has corrected your problem.

    * Have you SP1 installed?

    * Have you received any Error Numbers?

    * Have you checked in Event Viewer?

    Type eventvwr in search.
    Go to the windows log > application > in the left hand column note anything that relates to the problem.
    Please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

    Can you manually install updates? Yes or No?

    Questions answered

    Yes, SP1 is installed.

    Yes, I can manually install updates.

    I do not see that any updates were released in the past 24 hrs, so there is nothing I know of that I can do now to test what I've done so far. Any ideas?

    An error number I researched yesterday when following the troubleshooting tips was 80246007. Some other recent ones are C355 and C0000135.

    No, I had not checked out the Event Viewer. In doing so now, I see a lot of Bonjour Service, SideBySide, Tivo Transfer, ESENT, Event System, User Profile Service, VSS, etc. errors. 31,680 total!! I'm in over my head here as far as what is related. Here's one I see a lot that might be related -- CAPI2 (Event ID 4107, OpCode Info). And this? gupdate (Event ID 0, OpCode is blank, source code... ??? is that the gupdate?).

    *I suggest you wait until the next updates are offered to see if your problem has been resolved.

    * Re update settings -
    I suggest you change them to notify you but let you choose to download.
    Do a few at a time only.
    Should you have problems take note of the KB******* number & note any related error messages in Event Viewer.

    *FYI.
    Always make sure you have a current system restore point prior to downloading anything.

    Problem status update (PC #1)

    Windows Defender updated automatically last night.

    I choose yesterday to leave the auto installed on because I did not feel manually installing my updates would tell me if my problem was solved. Instead I look at the update history to see if the auto updates were working (installing automatically).

    Thank you for the restore point tip JMH.

    So, do we think the (windows auto update) problem on the PC is resolved?

    All will be revealed in the fullness of time I suspect.
    Please keep us posted on what happens there.
    Good luck!

    PC #2 Specifics

    Okay, I will keep monitoring PC #1.

    PC #2 is a Dell Precision M6400 laptop. Here are the stock specs -- Dell Precision M6400 Specifications ~ Laptop Specs. I have added a second HDD. I added memory for a total of 8GB. I also upgraded to Win7 Pro. I think that is all I have changed.

    On about July 30, 2011 I reformatted the HDD and reinstalled the OS. Updates were set to install automatically for all users. The (Windows) update history shows all updates (important and recommended) have been successful except for 2 recommended .NET Framework 4 updates dated 8/9/11. Since 8/9/11, both important and recommended updates have installed automatically. [Yup, you read that correctly. And correct, no failures listed in the updated history.] I have done nothing to troubleshoot other than gather info. I have the feeling getting advice on this machine at this point might be prudent.
