When downloading from your link, it brought in some nasty that my machine picked up on. I can't recall exactly what it said, as I clicked 'clean up'.
I did use a similar item, & the O.S keys are different - but then they would be.
The machines came from different places.

True, but the program is clean. This has been a problem with this program since day 1, that is, the program is reported as a bad guy but isn't.
I use the program myself.
What you can do is run SIW, the link is in my sig, or you can run the Belarc Security Advisor-which is always good, since the pgm let's you know which MS updates are missing.

There is a list of updates in the update history. It also tells us the importance & which files 'failed'.
This machine constantly fails:
KB 2310138 Def Update Optional
I.E 9 Optional

However, I downloaded Belarc & done an initial scan. It does come up with a lot of info. All I need now, is the knowledge to decode that info – please.
In the missing files bit:
All required security hotfixes (using the 10/11/2011 Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary) have been installed.
Hotfixes from Microsoft Update (agent version 7.5.7601.17514) install automatically. Last install: 15/10/2011 15:32:56, download: 15/10/2011 15:32:20, check: 19/10/2011 08:45:04.

Go view your update history,
that kb is for the Microsoft Security Essentials definitions.
Do you have a long list of failed updates for MSE definitions?
To view your history, you can:
Control Panel | Windows Update | click on View update history (next to date of the last time you installed updates)
Are you using any av or firewall software in addition to MSE?
The repeated failure of MSE definition updates is a matter of grave concern.
Re: repeated failures of MSE updates.
If a previous antivirus or antispyware was previously on the machine(s) in question, and if they were uninstalled using Control Panel > Programs and Features, there might be some files left behind that prevented a good install of MSE and subsequent updates. Many antimalware companies have their own uninstallers and these should be used to clean out any remnants.

A good point. I'm waiting to hear what is says about what is installed. I failed to ask what had been installed.
Ive used Autoruns to first disable and then remove startup entries before from unruly programs as I view such to be a form of malware.

The machine was built just after Christmas this year with all new parts. MSE has been on there ever since, along with Comodo F.W & S.Cleaner. I then added my old favourite: Malwarebytes.
Karl: The KB that I gave seems to be the only one that constantly fails - on this machine - apart from the IE9.
Upon double checking, I now see that the same KB number has been Successful on many occasions, & Fails on others, until I see the Definition numbers. The same KB has different Def’s.
Having said that, some of them that were successful some time ago, are being re loaded, for eg: (Definition 1.113.1445.0) has re loaded several times. So what I thought was a single file -KB2310138- failing, it seems that I do have several Definitions failing within that KB.

I would like to get IE9 up'n'running, although Win-8 will contain IE10. I'm tempted to try a beta version (Win-8) on my laptop (win-7 ult 32bit) - which has its own update anomaly.
(I was rather hoping that both machines have the same fault, as they both won’t update a couple of – different – files; the lappy won’t update SP1 & KB2515325. I’ll put up another post when I have the desktop sorted.)

100% remove Comodo.
Only run Malware once every blue moon. In other words, do not leave it on at all times but run it only when you have reason to believe that somehow, someway malware got past MSE.
Do both of those things.
I know that you want to get Ie9 running but to me, the fact that there have been MSE install failures is much a much more serious matter.
After both removing Comodo and disabling MalwareBytes, then reboot your computer and go to Windows Update and see if you can successfully update MSE.

I uninstalled Comodo & MWB completely (Is Comodo recommended by anyone ? The guy that set-up my system swears by it.)
I ran Scannow 3 times on the trot.
I now have managed to download IE9 - yooo reeka.
In high spirits I tried the very same thing on the laptop - expecting the same result - but,,,,,,
it made no difference. This one is obstinate about downloading SP1. The symptoms are pretty similar to the desktop, but with the different file.
Shall I start another post – although I think this one covers just about everything,,,,, unless you know better ?
